Class IV Laser

One of the biggest evolutions in technology to impact soft tissue healing is the advent of Class IV Laser.  Class IV laser  works by delivering focused, coherent light to specific tissues. When this laser light interacts with cells, it stimulates photobiomodulation – a process that triggers various cellular responses. The absorbed photons enhance cellular metabolism, leading to increased ATP production and improved cell function by accelerating protein synthesis.  This, in turn, promotes tissue repair, reduces inflammation, and helps manage pain. The specific wavelengths and parameters of the laser are crucial, influencing penetration depth and therapeutic outcomes. Overall, laser therapy harnesses the power of light to stimulate biological processes, aiding in the healing of soft tissues.  Studies show that use of Class IV laser can accelerate healing processes by as much as 50%.  50% faster, who would not want that?

There are a lot of different lasers out there but Class IV is the only ones shown to have such dramatic impact on soft tissue healing.  This has to do with the amount of energy that a Class IV laser produces versus a Class III.  Class III lasers only penetrate up to 2.0 cm2 where a Class IV will penetrate 10 cm2.  You do not see a lot of these in a typical PT clinic due to the cost of the device ($50K to $100K) and the fact that insurance does not reimburse for it.  But they are so effective, it is one reason that almost every NLF, NBA and elite military group use them.

At The Athlete Lab, we use the Summus Medical Laser.  This is a high quality class IV laser that is a big part of The Athlete Lab’s rehabilitation and recovery programs.  Knowing the impact this has on biology and physiology, The Athlete Lab may also recommend certain nutritional programs in addition to laser therapy.  Providing the body with all the supplements and nutrients it needs to optimize the results of the laser has been shown in the research to have an even greater impact on soft tissue healing and recovery.  As such, your Athlete Lab Sports Physical Therapist may recommend certain nutrition packages to supplement your laser treatment.

Laser treatment is typically included as a part of your treatment, if indicated.  However, existing patients can just schedule to have a laser treatment session alone.  If you are new to the Athlete Lab, we ask you to schedule a Physical Therapy Evaluation in order to determine if Class IV laser is right for you.
